Five Months in the Life of Hazel

Hazel turned five months! We've been looking forward to this age because I had read that this was when baby's daytime sleep begins to consolidate, and it was true! A couple of weeks ago Hazel started taking longer naps which has had a big impact on everybody's mood.

Growth & Development
  • Weight: about 12 pounds (3rd percentile)
  • Clothing size: 3-6 month
  • Diaper size: 3
  • Frequently rolls front to back
  • Tries grasping everything, and knocks things over a lot
  • Drooling and gumming on everything
  • Stares at her fingers like she's trying to figure out how they work

Likes
  • Being kissed on the cheeks
  • Being lifted up/thrown in the air
  • When I "eat" her toes
  • Silicone-type teething toys
  • Being loud
  • Being outside

Dislikes
  • Eating
  • Being tired
  • Getting bonked in the head by Levi on accident

Fun Facts
  • Eyes are maybe getting some brown in them? It's really hard to tell what color her eyes are, and we realized recently that it's the same with Levi--they both have dark eyes, but not brown, like a dark bluish maybe greenish maybe with some brown around the iris?
  • Snort-cries when she's really upset

Eating
Ugh. I don't want to talk about this. Basically, at her four-month check-up that we had right after I had written last month's update, we found that her percentile had continued to drop for weight, so her doctor recommended that we see a lactation specialist, start solids, and come in for weight checks more often. It has been stressful worrying about whether she's eating and growing enough. I've been trying some diet modifications and considering reflux treatments for her, but she doesn't really have clear symptoms to indicate allergy or reflux...she's just "fussy" and doesn't like to eat.

Sleeping
It's not all bad, though! As I mentioned before, her naps have improved dramatically, so it feels like I get a bit more of a break, and she's doing a little better being around Tygan as well. She takes three naps a day for 1-2 hours and goes to bed around 8 p.m.; we wake her up for a "dream feed" around 9:30 and then, because of her weight issues, again around 11:45. After that she'll sleep until 5 or 6, which is not ideal. We tried waiting until her 5 a.m. wake-up to do her second night feed, instead of waking her up for a second dream feed, but then she struggles to go back to sleep and it messes with our whole day. So we give her the pacifier in the morning and she'll sleep til 6 or 7.

Looking forward to...
  • Being cleared by the doctor in a month or two to wean that second night feeding so that I can maybe get a consistent 6-8 hours of sleep
  • Switching to bottles/formula if we don't get this figured out by 6 months (6 mo of nursing was my goal)
  • Learning to sit!
  • Maybe finding safe ways to get her her first swimming experience and first time swinging at a park during this pandemic
